lauren + charlie: i do take two

you know those times you can't do anything to keep the tears from flowing? this wedding was one of those times. lauren and charlie are not your typical bride and groom... well because they've been married for five years. they stole off to a courthouse and got married in front of a judge because when you know, why wait? that day, they promised each other they would celebrate in a big way some day. fast forward five years, two kids, and a few deployments later, and that day came. the day was relaxed, beautiful, and one of the most emotion-filled weddings I've had the pleasure of photographing. I owe a huge shout out to my second shooter, tanis for the beautiful photos, and the support throughout the two days I was there. congratulations lauren and charlie. I know you'll be amazing together. you already are.

I've been MIA for a couple months now, but that's not due to lack of work--it's due to lack of energy. I have a lot of catching up to do on this blog, and that may or may not happen in the next couple months. For now, I guess it's time to let my clients know 1. I'm pregnant, and 2. I'm due tomorrow.

So, I'll be taking a maternity leave until July 10th, at which time I'll be back into the swing of things, and {I'm sure} itching to shoot again. For now, here's one of my favorites from my own maternity shoot a couple months ago. The shawl is my grandmother's--it even still smells like her, even though she passed away 10 years ago.

We can't wait to welcome another little boy into our family. It's only a matter of hours until we go from three to four. :)

looking at these pictures makes me miss the east so much. I love it here, but the beautiful greenery just can't be beat. I'm trying to appreciate the desert more, and the beautiful winter weather makes it easier, but I'm feeling slightly nostalgic right now. *sigh*

Remember this? Well, the time has come. Here we go!

What camera do you use? The short answer? Canon 50D. Upgrading soon to Canon 5D Mark II (woot!). The long answer? My experience, hours behind the camera, and "eye" (as some people call it) is much more of an asset to me than any camera ever could be. As my husband says, you can play Jimmy Hendrix's guitar, but that doesn't mean you'll sound like him. So, you want to take fantastic pictures? Start with your point and shoot. Wear it out--outgrow it completely, THEN buy the fancy camera. And completely outgrow that before you upgrade. Equipment does not a photographer make. :)

What lens do love to shoot with and most prefer to use? Keeping the above in mind, I absolutely adore my Canon 24-70mm F2.8 L series lens. It is on my camera 90 percent of the time. I also love my Canon 50mm F1.4. My most exciting and "fun" lens? The Sigma 10-20mm. It's so fun to play with, and I love the distortion of the wide angle. See the second picture below for an example...

What is your typical post-processing process? I could probably write pages and pages about this subject, but I'll try to keep it short and sweet.
1. First things first, I try to get the shot as perfect in camera as I can. I shoot all in manual mode, playing with the settings until I get it just where I want it. I try to get the crop as dead on as possible, and if I'm extra ambitious, I'll even set a custom white balance. This first step is crucial to my post processing, because it speeds things up considerably.
2. Import to Adobe Lightroom. Sort, export as Raw files.
3. Open in Camera Raw (an add-on to Photoshop). Do all my quick fixes--exposure, white balance, black compensation, straightening, etc.
4. Open in Photoshop, run the usual actions, and tweak whatever needs to be tweaked.
5. Save.
6. Open, automate batch with black & white action. Tweak.
7. Save.
8. Import retouched photos to Lightroom. Export one last time "web ready."
...that's a lot, right? I know. Time consuming, but worth it. And, in all those steps, I've created three different sets of pictures for my clients. Color, Black and White, and Web. With all that being said, I've done a few full batches of photos almost exclusively in Lightroom (with the exception of the black and white set which I do in Photoshop). Lightroom is definitely faster. Biggest drawback? No layers. No actions (there are presets, but I prefer actions). Not as much control. Choose your poison. :) The photo below was edited all in Lightroom, but I'm completely happy with the way it turned out.

See the difference from beginning to end?

What is your favorite edit program? What is your favorite tool/feature to use on your photos? I guess I already answered the first part in the previous question. Photoshop, hands down, is the best editing tool for photographers (in my opinion, of course). My favorite tool lately is new to CS5. Has anyone used the Puppet Warp tool? It's so amazing!! You should really try it out. Here, I'll show you:

See? I'm skinnier (if only it were that easy). And it looks pretty dang natural. Don't you think?

Many of your photographs have a "soft" element to it, do you get this end result through photoshop edit or your manual camera settings? Good question. I've thought about your question a lot. I've never really considered my photos to be "soft" before. But, I can see it now that you mention it. I think most of it is camera settings. I try to keep my ISO as low as possible, and sometimes I have to bring my aperture down quite low to achieve that. The low aperture makes wide open focusing more difficult, but it also gives the photo a softer look. The other element you're probably seeing is the skin softening tool I use. I have to give a shout out to Totally Rad Actions for the ProRetouch action. It's the bomb. You should try it. Wanna see what it does?

Yeah. It's that good.

How do you prevent your pictures from redirecting to blogger when you click on them? Well, to be honest, this wasn't intentional, but I guess that is kind of nice. I'll tell you.
1. Upload to photobucket.
2. Paste the following HTML code into the HTML section of your editor:

Be aware, the width number is variable depending on how wide the body of your blog is. I did some tweaking to my blog template, and made the body a little wider.
3. Post the direct link code from Photobucket into the "URL" section.
Done!
Not rocket science, but it works for me. By the way, I hear Flickr is better for Photographers. I have an account, and I'm considering posting everything from there, but I haven't taken the time to figure it out. Just sayin'.

What is your work schedule? How do you balance mommying and photography? Well, this is the question of the day. I think my biggest realization from day one to now is no matter how much photography lights up my life (which is does), it is a JOB. If you are delivering a lot of shoots to clients, you have to consider yourself a working mother. And, being a working mother--balancing family, clients, church, work, and down time--is tricky. Very tricky. Right now, I'm busy. Very busy. And my laundry, among other things, suffers because of it. DJ and I are thinking outsourcing is the way to go. I don't feel comfortable outsourcing any part of my photo process, or my Mommy time, but I feel perfectly comfortable outsourcing the cleaning. :) I always shoot in the evenings, and I retouch as often as I possibly can. I get up early (like 5am early), head off to the gym, and come back and work until Mack is up and at 'em. We play, play, play, and Mack goes down for a nap. I try to never let a napping moment go "unworked." Then, I work for a little bit after DJ gets home. I put in a little time after Mack goes down, but I try not to spend too much time because there are other things in my life/around the house that need attention as well (you know, like my marriage and stuff... oh yeah, and cleaning up dinner :) ). I think this is an evolving process. Things are getting busier for me as a photographer, which I love and am absolutely ecstatic about, but it requires a new balance in my life. One thing will always be true though. Nothing is more important to me than this little guy. I mean, look at him. I just wanna squeeze him.

I'm doing everything in my power not to melt into a puddle on the floor.

if I seem to have been neglecting this blog, it's because I have been neglecting this blog. our house is full of packed up moving boxes, and silly me, I'm still trying to shoot sessions. I just can't seem to talk myself out of spending an evening with new friends and my camera. I only have one more shoot in pittsburgh (until I return for a wedding in september), and I'm dreading the feeling of being "done" here.

I'm sure all you're hearing is "blah, blah, blah," so here we go: on to the pictures.

I have EIGHT sessions to post. yes, I said eight. considering my computer is going to be packed up any day now, I've got to get a move on.

I've never seen such an alert newborn, and I loved it. we were able to get a few good minutes of sleeping in, but mostly we enjoyed her beautiful eyes.

I love this last photo, because she's looking straight up at her mommy. I just think the connection a newborn feels to their parents is an amazing thing.

I have so much more to share. we'll see how much gets accomplished before I drive away in a moving truck on sunday. :)

a few weeks ago, I got an email from a friend asking to do a session. but not just any old session, she wanted to do a secret session, and she even asked if I wanted to bring my little one along. I've never taken my little guy to one of my shoots before (because he's crazy), but I thought it could be fun. so I packed him up and brought him along. verdict? it was so fun! a little crazy, but I'm so glad our kids got to hang out. we even took them to the children's museum for play and lunch. all in all, it was a successful day. we even ended the day with a few headshots of her in the wind. she's so beautiful, there really wasn't anything I could do to mess it up. check it out:

I love so many things about these photos.

1. they're of a friend, and I love doing photos for friends--it makes it that much more special.

I love my clients. I don't know if I'm just lucky, but I always have so much fun with the families who book me for sessions. this family was no exception. they were so laid back and ready to try anything. it was an adventure in and of itself trying to get all eyes on the camera, but let's be honest, the best photos are the real moments when eyes are on each other anyway, right? here's what we came up with after an afternoon on a downtown bridge. check out this amazingly beautiful family:

I like to offer styling advice to my clients when it comes to their sessions. I believe it's vital to the way the shoot turns out. sometimes people absolutely love it, and want it. other times, I offer it, and it is politely declined. this was one of those times, and look how amazing the outfits are. she nailed it! the colors are perfect, and they look amazing together. ...and her hair even matches. ever since I met her I've been coveting her hair cut/color. I love pittsburgh. a lot. look at this random wall in the middle of the city. where else would you find something this amazing? so of course we had to stop. I kind of forced my friend to be in a few pictures. a little. she likes me though, so I think we're okay.

I think I say this a lot, but I mean it this time. this is probably one of my favorite pictures ever. there's just something about the "realness" of this moment, and the way her yellow jacket frames the shot. I love it.

we have been busy. really, really busy. doing what, you ask? shooting, of course, but that's not all. the man of the house is in his final semester of graduate school, and he's wrapping up classes, board examinations, and job searches, and we're wrapping up city searches, house/apartment/condo hunting (or just starting!), and our biggest project: selling our house. we've had six showings in the last seven days which means lots of cleaning, lots of "please don't touch that, mack," and lots of escaping the house in order to keep it in tip top shape. it's all paying off as the offers are coming in... thank heavens. but, in the mean time, we've been thrifting, garage selling, and estate selling. my latest find is a pair of chairs I got for $2.50 each. I cleaned, painted, and scuffed 'em up a little, and I came out with cute little photo prop chairs. see?

...and a wreath I made a few weeks back to top it all off.

I've never considered myself much of a crafter, but I've been inspired by the author of Life in the Pitts (who happens to be a friend), so I'm exploring my crafty side a little more lately... even if everything I make does end up being for photo sessions. hey, I have my obsessions, right? I've got to make it all work. :)

I like to think my newborns generally like me. At least that's what I tell myself. We hang out, have a little bonding time, spend a few hours taking pictures, and spend half of that time cuddling and singing sleepy songs. I don't claim to have any special touch, but in the end mommy and I always come out on top. This little guy gave us the run around. He is NOT a fan of being naked. Who can blame him? No one wants to be stripped down to nothing in a stranger's house, even if they are singing sleepy songs and rocking you back and forth--uh-hmmm, especially if they're doing that. So, after one full session of trying, trying and trying to get those coveted naked pictures, Trey went home with the promise of trying again. After brainstorming with mommy, we decided clothing was the way to go. I heart these pictures. Maybe I should do clothed newborns more often. :) So, here are the photos from both days. Trey knows what's goin' on. He's a cutie.

I promised you exciting news, so here it is!! for the last couple weeks, I've been working feverishly on my (drum roll please...) brand. new. website!!

one of my best friend's daughter turned one... last december. somehow these didn't make it on the blog... here are a few of the shots we caught for her one year old pictures.

yet another family post that didn't make it up last fall. check out the watsons. they were so much fun to work with. the little guy was 10 weeks old (WAY older than I ever shoot for newborns), but we actually got him to sleep for a few minutes. I love, love, LOVE the hat shot (hat made by my amazing sister-in-law). this is such a cute little guy. see for yourself:

isn't this little boy just about the cutest thing you've ever seen? his dark eyes and pink cheeks are the perfect combo. we found a fluke afternoon when the temperatures were in the 40's (it hasn't happened since), got outside, and snuck some photos of this cute little family. I love their greys and oranges. my clients are the best. :)

isn't she adorable? and her name is so cute. what a little doll! piper's pictures were taken when she was three weeks old, so it was a little tougher to get the sleepy ones, but she's so cute with her eyes open, that we came out all the better!

...I promise I'm nice to my newborns... :)

I don't typically shoot big groups, and I NEVER shoot indoors, unless it's at my studio. I was excited about the big group, but when we woke up to a snowstorm on the only day this family could do photos, I wasn't quite as excited about the prospect of shooting inside. After some equipment rental, and fretting about a location, we came out on top. of course, my favorites are the ones we took when we stole outside into the snow storm. :) here are the photos we came up with...

well, here they are. I had the pleasure of photographing this beautiful couple's wedding. the setting was perfect (arizona in the winter time=heaven), as were they. they now have a nice big family of eight, and I think they look quite lovely together. check out the party:

oh, mesa arts center, how I love you. please, let me know pack you up and stick you on a street corner in pittsburgh--please!! and maybe I can ask this color savvy lady to consult for all my families. aren't their colors awesome? not to mention, they're just about the most photogenic family I've ever seen. and, I'm dying over the little one at the end of the post. she's gonna be a heart breaker.

this baby and her parents were so fun to work with. we even had grandma on hand as an extra helper, and she made everything run so smoothly!
they literally stepped out of the hospital, and came to my house. look at this little two day old girl.
